🇮🇳 Before the Indian Grand Prix: How India Chased Formula 1

The long journey that eventually brought Formula 1 to India.

Formula 1 did not arrive in India overnight.

The first Indian Grand Prix in 2011 was the result of years of proposals, negotiations and ambitious plans to build a world-class racing facility.

The Early Dream

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, interest grew in bringing Formula 1 to India.

India represented a huge potential market for Formula 1. Its growing economy, large population and expanding interest in international sport made it an attractive destination.

But there was one enormous requirement: India needed a circuit capable of hosting a Formula 1 World Championship event.

Hyderabad Enters the Picture

Hyderabad became one of the early serious proposals.

Plans were discussed for a large motorsport facility near the outskirts of the city. A proposed site was associated with Gopanapally and a substantial amount of land was considered for the project.

However, the proposed Hyderabad project never developed into India's Formula 1 venue.

Mumbai and Bangalore

Mumbai was also investigated as a possible destination, with locations including Gorai and Navi Mumbai discussed.

Bangalore was another candidate because of its infrastructure, international profile and growing technology sector.

Other proposals emerged around northern India, eventually bringing Greater Noida and the National Capital Region into the discussion.

The Gurgaon Proposal

Gurgaon was among the locations considered during the push to establish India's first Formula 1 venue.

The project was part of a wider effort involving the Indian Olympic Association and Formula One's commercial organisation.

Greater Noida Emerges

Eventually, the Formula 1 project moved towards Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

A new permanent circuit would be built as part of the Jaypee Green Sports City development.

THE TURNING POINT

India would no longer simply be discussing Formula 1. It would actually build a circuit capable of hosting it.

Hermann Tilke and the Circuit

German architect Hermann Tilke was involved in designing the circuit.

The resulting Buddh International Circuit featured long straights, fast corners, elevation changes and wide racing surfaces.

2011: The Dream Becomes Reality

After years of planning and delays, the first Indian Grand Prix finally took place on 30 October 2011.

Sebastian Vettel took pole position and won the inaugural race for Red Bull Racing.

India had officially become a Formula 1 host nation.
