THE INVISIBLE WEAPON: Venturi Tunnels and Underfloor Ground Effect

The F1 Floor Explained • Ground Effect Downforce.

Series: Know F1 • Reading Time: 5 Mins • Format: Web / Video Companion

“Over 60% of an F1 car's total downforce is generated underneath the floor where spectators can't even see it.”

While wings are easily visible, the true performance secret of a modern F1 car lies completely hidden underneath. Sculpted underfloor channels called Venturi tunnels harness ground effect physics to suck the car flat against the track surface.

How Venturi Tunnels Work

  • The Choke Point: As air enters the underfloor inlets, the tunnels narrow. This forces air to accelerate rapidly.
  • Pressure Drop: According to fluid dynamics, fast-moving air drops significantly in pressure. This creates a low-pressure vacuum zone underneath the chassis.
  • Clean Downforce: Because this suction is generated beneath the car rather than via top wings, it creates minimal aerodynamic drag and allows cars to follow each other much closer through fast corners.
