Madring Madrid: Everything You Need to Know About F1's Newest Circuit

Formula 1 arrives in Madrid for a brand-new chapter in Spanish Grand Prix history.

Formula 1 is heading somewhere new. This weekend, the championship arrives in Madrid for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the brand-new Madring circuit.

The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix takes place from 11–13 September, with Formula 1 making its competitive debut at a circuit that combines public-road sections with permanent track infrastructure.

A New Circuit for a New Era

Madring becomes the newest addition to the Formula 1 calendar and brings the championship back to Madrid for the first time since 1981.

The circuit is located around the IFEMA exhibition area and Barajas airport, creating a very different setting from the traditional Barcelona-based Spanish Grand Prix.

For the drivers, there is one major problem: there is almost no real-world race experience to fall back on.

Madring is the 78th different venue to host a Formula 1 World Championship race.

22 Corners and One Very Unusual Turn

The Madring layout features 22 corners, with a mixture of slower technical sections and faster flowing parts of the circuit.

But one corner has already attracted enormous attention.

La Monumental

Turn 12, known as La Monumental, is a heavily banked 270-degree corner and one of the most distinctive features of the new circuit.

With banking reaching approximately 24 percent, drivers will experience a corner unlike anything else currently on the F1 calendar.

The banking could allow cars to carry significant speed through the section, but it will also place unusual demands on tyres and aerodynamic balance.

Who Has the Advantage?

It is difficult to predict the competitive order at a completely new circuit.

Mercedes arrives in Madrid with enormous confidence after Kimi Antonelli's spectacular victory at Monza. The Italian won from 19th on the grid and now leads teammate George Russell by 66 points.

McLaren and Ferrari will be expected to challenge, while local heroes Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso will receive plenty of attention from the home crowd.

The First Real Test

Simulation work can provide teams with thousands of virtual laps, but nothing replaces a Formula 1 car running at racing speed on a new circuit.

Track evolution, tyre temperatures, braking references and aerodynamic behaviour will all have to be learned extremely quickly.

That makes the first qualifying session at Madring particularly interesting.

FORMULA 1 INDIA VERDICT

Madring has all the ingredients to become one of the most distinctive new circuits on the F1 calendar. With a championship battle already heating up, Madrid could provide one of the most unpredictable weekends of the 2026 season.
