Spanish GP 2026 Qualifying Preview: Who Will Take Pole at Madring?
Madrid's new circuit is ready for its first Formula 1 qualifying session.
Formula 1 arrives in Madrid for a weekend unlike any other in 2026. The new Madring circuit will host its first Spanish Grand Prix, and Saturday's qualifying session could be one of the most unpredictable of the season.
Unlike traditional circuits where teams have years of data to understand tyre behaviour, track evolution and setup windows, Madring represents a blank sheet of paper. Teams have simulation data and preparation work, but qualifying will provide the first real indication of how the new-generation cars perform at racing speeds around Madrid.
Why Qualifying Matters So Much at Madring
Madring combines tight technical corners, high-speed sections, elevation changes and the spectacular banked La Monumental. The circuit features 22 corners, while cars can reach speeds of around 340 km/h on the straights.
That combination creates an unusual setup challenge. Teams must find the right compromise between straight-line efficiency and cornering stability.
Can a driver extract maximum performance from the tyres over one flying lap without sacrificing stability through the technical sections?
Kimi Antonelli: Championship Leader Under Pressure
Kimi Antonelli arrives in Madrid with momentum on his side.
The Mercedes driver won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after starting from 19th on the grid, producing one of the most remarkable drives of his young career. The victory extended his championship advantage over teammate George Russell to 66 points.
But Madring is an entirely different challenge. Mercedes cannot simply assume that its Monza performance will translate directly to Madrid.
Mercedes vs McLaren vs Ferrari
The biggest qualifying battle should involve Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari.
- Mercedes: Championship leader with strong 2026 form.
- McLaren: A major threat over a lap and in race conditions.
- Ferrari: Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton bring valuable experience, including Ferrari's filming-day running at the circuit.
- Red Bull: Max Verstappen remains capable of producing a qualifying surprise.
The Carlos Sainz Factor
Madrid-born Carlos Sainz will be one of the biggest crowd favourites.
Williams may not have the outright performance to challenge Mercedes or McLaren for pole position, but a home crowd and an unusual circuit can sometimes produce unexpected qualifying performances.
What to Watch in Q1, Q2 and Q3
Q1
Traffic could become a major issue. Drivers will need clean track space to build tyre temperature and complete representative laps.
Q2
This is where tyre preparation and setup compromises could become critical. A small mistake could send a normally competitive driver into the elimination zone.
Q3
The final ten drivers will have just a handful of opportunities to master a completely new circuit. Pole position could come down to hundredths of a second.
Formula1India Prediction
Mercedes enters the weekend as the benchmark, but Madring's unfamiliar characteristics could allow McLaren, Ferrari or Red Bull to challenge.
Watch: Antonelli, Russell, Norris, Piastri, Leclerc, Hamilton and Verstappen.
