What Replaced DRS in F1? Active Aero and Overtake Mode Explained

Formula 1's 2026 regulations completely changed the way cars reduce drag and attack rivals.

For more than a decade, three letters became synonymous with Formula 1 overtaking:

DRS

The Drag Reduction System allowed drivers to open a flap in the rear wing on designated sections of the circuit, reducing drag and increasing straight-line speed.

But in 2026, DRS is gone.

So What Replaced DRS?

The new generation of Formula 1 cars uses active aerodynamics.

Instead of relying on a rear-wing flap that was primarily associated with overtaking, the 2026 cars can change their aerodynamic configuration using movable front and rear-wing elements.

Straight Mode

On straights, the aerodynamic configuration can move towards a lower-drag setting.

The objective is simple:

LESS DRAG → MORE STRAIGHT-LINE SPEED

This is different from the old DRS philosophy because the low-drag configuration is not simply an overtaking button reserved for a driver following another car.

Corner Mode

When the car approaches corners, the wings can return towards a higher-downforce configuration.

That allows the car to generate the aerodynamic grip required for braking and cornering.

Then What Is Overtake Mode?

Formula 1 introduced Overtake Mode as a new performance aid designed specifically to create additional overtaking opportunities.

When a chasing driver meets the required conditions, the system can provide additional electrical-energy deployment.

In simple terms:

Old System 2026 System
DRS Active Aerodynamics + Overtake Mode
Rear-wing flap Movable front and rear aero
Drag reduction Low-drag aero configuration
Overtaking aid Additional electrical deployment

Why Did F1 Change It?

The 2026 regulations are designed around a different philosophy of racing.

The cars are lighter, the power units have a much larger electrical contribution, and aerodynamic efficiency has become even more important.

The goal is to create cars that can race more closely while giving drivers different tools for attacking and defending.

F1 INDIA EXPLAINS:
DRS was essentially a drag-reduction tool that became an overtaking aid. In 2026, Formula 1 separates those ideas into active aerodynamic configurations and a dedicated Overtake Mode.

Is DRS Gone Forever?

For the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, the traditional DRS system has been replaced.

That does not mean the basic aerodynamic principle has disappeared. Reducing drag on a straight is still incredibly important.

What has changed is how Formula 1 achieves it.
